When Pepper woke up, her head throbbed and her bones ached from sitting in the same position. She had a large, heavy metal manacle round her wrist that was fastened to the wall by a thick chain. The wind howled outside the dark room. She shivered, and tried to pull her coat round her. Water ran in rivulets down the dank walls. The stench of metal, sour milk and rotting meat was carried to her on the wind. Moonlight stole in at a small, dirty window, broke in two and flapped around the room like bats. Panic clutched her. What was she doing here? Her memory was fuzzy, like wading through marshmallow.

The room was dark, cold and damp. She could smell dog shit and wet feet. She thought she could hear the sound of sobbing. When she called out, ‘Who’s there?’ the sound ceased and she thought she’d imagined it. The door opened with a creak and a shape filled the doorway.

Then she remembered and her body shook.
